Lore

I recently posted the official Planetside 2 backstory timeline as well and the unofficial timeline to the blog in text form. Now I have made a set of narrated videos, with the Planetside soundtrack in the background and a slideshow of images. You can watch them here.

The Planetside lore only what describes what happens up until the landing on Auraxis in 2643, then there is a 200-year gap in the lore from the landing until the war starts (read the official timeline here). A lot remains unexplained, like how did Auraxian civilisation develop in the 200 years before the war? Where did the warpgates and rebirthing technology come from? Why did it take 200 years for the war to break out?

I attempt to answer all of these questions and more in this unofficial Planetside 2 lore timeline. They will all be posted over the next week or so. Let me know what you think! Is it lore-friendly? Do you think something else happened that I haven’t written about?

Part 1: The Official timeline – The Rise of the Republic to Landing on Auraxis (2345-2643)

Part 2: The Landing to the Golden Years (2643-2794)

Part 3: Storm clouds to Prelude to War (2795-2844)

Part 4: Extreme Measures to Endless War (2844-2895)

Hi all,

I just added Alpha Squad part 7 – Open Field to the website. You can find it here. If you haven’t read any of Alpha Squad before, then part 1 can be found here.

As usual, let me know if you have any comments, suggestions or requests for Alpha Squad or any of my other stories!

APRIL 23rd 2896 – 51 years after the start of the War

The Indarian Capitol was once the jewel of the Terran Republic. I can still picture the magnificent skyscrapers that glittered high above the steppe, the parks packed with people bathing in the midsummer heat, the boulevards lined with market traders shouting to passers-by.

There are five of us remaining in the rubble. The sand covers the streets to our ankles. Given fifty years and a few desert tempests, the Capitol will be completely buried in dust. Lost until archaeologists hundreds of years from now unearth the true depth of our foolishness.

You see, it wasn’t the War that destroyed centuries of Terran Republic knowledge, democracy and culture on Auraxis. We did it ourselves. In the shadow of the Great Siege and our ultimate destruction, we panicked and abandoned everything we stood for; we surrendered our lives for the soothing security of the rebirthing matrix. Some of us tried to end the terrible addiction to endless life, but our warnings were too little, too late. Will anyone be left to learn from our mistakes once we are gone?

The story behind the birth of respawning technology on Auraxis has long been shrouded by the chaos that accompanied the Great War. However, the recent discovery of the ruins underneath Xenotech labs has given our Sovereignty Archive a much deeper insight into the actions of key figures who took part in these dramatic and world-changing events. One of the most important being the Luminary and hero of the Sovereignty, Dr Laor Foster.

Without his heroic deeds, the Vanu Sovereignty may not have been able to resist the Republic and Conglomerate assaults in the early days of the War. What follows is his account of Xenotech labs in the final months before the War began.  May Vanu bring him peace.

Entry 1 – March 2nd 2844

Could Professor Hutchins be right? That the strange, pulsating energy source within the Vanu artifact may be connected to the ‘life force’ of nearby beings? He is convinced that the relic does much more than echo the dying; that the stone contains the key to creating life itself. Body and mind together!

The theory could explain the energy spikes following the death of the rodent subjects – but that this artifact contains the ‘spark’ that turns an inanimate object into a living being… I can’t believe it. Surely Vanu would not simply hand us the power of life and death on a plate? We are still so immature as a species; are we ready to deal with the enormous responsibility of recreating life?

The entire lab is having daily discussions about what to do next. Professor Hugo too sees patterns and structure in the energy spike – next month our research group will try to capture this structure following the death of the fly and recreate it in the lab it through nanite reconstruction. I’m sure it’ll be a dead end, but it’s worth a try.

Now as an mp3! I’m no actor, but let me know what you think 🙂

The first time you die, your body fights back. You clasp onto life like gripping a rope as the sea envelopes you; you scream with rage, your limbs thrash like a caged Kraken, your lungs roar with deep spasms, your breath labours until the last second, until finally, you shudder into darkness. The second time you die, you feel nothing. Your body accepts the turning as if fading to sleep. You silently embrace the blessed solitude in amongst the chaos of total war.

I have died nearly 10,000 times. I have killed countless thousands more. Most of those I knew have long gone. I have no family, no home to go to. I am nothing more than a shell, an empty vessel through which the hammer of the Terran Republic may smash their enemies and return peace to Auraxis. I am one of the last originals. I am the 100-year soldier.
